Hall [1983]). Among the correspondents are Alfred Gilman and Allen Tate. There is also a xerox copy of the script for a production of "The Bridge" by Hart Crane as a dance drama performed at Bennington College in the early 1930s

Correspondence, manuscripts, notecards, tabulation sheets, microfilms, photographs, and photostats. The bulk of the collection is made up of his Columbia University doctoral dissertation, THE OLD STOCK COMPANY SCHOOL OF ACTING; A STUDY OF THE BOSTON MUSEUM, and related research materials. The dissertation, published in 1945, uses the Bostom Museum Stock Company to exemplify the nature of American dramatic arts in the nineteenth century vis-a-vis professional theater organizations and their dual purpose of producing shows and training actors. The research materials appear in a variety of formats: chronological lists on notecards recording the actors that performed in particular plays; tabulation sheets that fulfill many purposes, such as recording each actor's experience, the roles the actors played, and the years that they were active with the company. Photographs include those taken of theater sets, actors in costume, and pictures of the Museum building. Photostats and microfilms are almost entirely reproductions of advertisements and flyers

Professional correspondence, diaries, unpublished articles, lecture notes, abstracts, and other manuscripts by Mitchell. Subjects include economic theory and its history, business cycles, money, national planing, anthropology and psychology, and published material by Mitchell and others.

Three volumes of correspondence, including some letterbook copies; many sermons, individually bound; prayers; and other manuscript materials. Correspondenbce is with many of his well known contemporaries and deals largely with matters pertaining to his church or to King's College. Shelved with the collection are two card file boxes containing an old handwritten calendar with abstracts, 1710-1914, a set of cross reference entries, and a calendar of material not at Columbia, 1715-1785. These include over four hundred letters to Alexander, as well as miscellaneous letters and telegrams; some of his manuscripts and notes; business records of his law firm; military documents of the western divisions of the Confederate Army; copybooks and letter books; and complete and partial newspapers and clippings from the various Southern newspapers (in particular THE SAVANNAH REPUBLICAN, the DAILY DISPATCH of Richmond, and the ADVERTISER AND REGISTER of Mobile) which carried Alexander's dispatches.

Professional and personal files including Armstrong's correspondence with professional associations, other engineers, and friends, his research notes, circuit diagrams, lectures, articles, legal papers, and other related materials. Of his many inventions and developments, the most important are: 1) the regenerative or feedback circuit, 1912, the first amplified radio reception, 2) the superheterodyne circuit, 1918, the basis of modern radio and radar, 3) superregeneration, 1922, a very simple, high-power receiver now used in emergency mobile service, and 4) frequency modulation - FM, 1933, static-free radio reception of high fidelity. More than half the files concern his many lawsuits, primarily with Radio Corporation of America, over infringement of the Armstrong patents. Litigation continued until 1967. Other files deal with his work in the Marcellus Hartley Research Laboratory at Columbia University, 1913-1935, and with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, his Air Force contracts for communications development, Army research during World War II, the Radio Club of America, the Institute of Radio Engineers, FM development at his radio station at Alpine, N.J., the use of FM in television, his involvement in Federal Communications Commission hearings and legislation, and his work with the Zenith Radio Corporation.
