The materials that comprise the Vertical File have been collected and added to from a variety of sources by former Avery Librarians. The vertical file contains clippings, pamphlets, reprints, and other miscellaneous materials relating to persons, places, organizations, and topical subjects relating to architecture, housing, and city planning. The purpose of the vertical file was to arrange and store small items, memorabilia, and ephemeral material on a variety of topics to facilitate access by researchers. For the most part, the vertical file contains printed items only. Manuscript material and other unique items were, generally, not placed in the vertical file. In some cases, manuscript material has been removed from the Vertical File and placed in its corresponding collection.

Includes drawings for stained glass window patterns, furniture designs for churches, drawings of saints, and other detail drawings.

Five drawings show proposed alterations to the house, and three drawings show cottages on the grounds, circa 1801-1804. Two plans of the grounds, 1820, one with proposed alterations, are also included.

Ware's architectural drawings for town and country houses, furniture, and many chimney pieces. Included are designs for Fort Belvedere, circa 1750; a competition design for a mansion house, London, submitted 1737; Woodcote Park, Surrey, circa 1750s; 6-7 Abingdon Street, London, built circa 1740s; alterations, circa 1732-1733, at 10 Downing Street, London; designs, possibly for London Hospital.

This collection contains primarily 19th-century published prints depicting British and French dramatic theatres, with a small representation of international theatres. Images of sculpture, costumes, and fashion plates are also included. The majority of images are from published sources and are colored. Nearly all the prints are titled and most include artist, printer, and/or publisher information. Many noted printmakers are represented in this collection.

This small collection contains primarily project records--including drawings, files, reports, correspondence, and photographs--related to the architectural practice of Kenneth Coles. The majority of projects, including commercial, institutional, and residential, are located in New York State, with a few commissions for Citibank and Grindlay's Bank and for private residences located overseas.

This collection includes primarily original etchings, engravings, and lithographs, as well as published images from a variety of sources, of individual architectural structures or the built environment. Most of the images are uncolored. The collection is especially strong in images from the United States and England. A significant number of images are plates from Walter Harrison's "A new and universal history, description and survey of the cities of London and Westminister, the borough of Southwark, and their adjacent parts." (London, J. Cooke, 1776). A small portion of the collection depicts decorative arts and interiors. Also included are a few ephemeral items--such as tickets, letterhead, receipts, and bills--that include architectural imagery.

Also, typescripts of lectures delivered by Boring in architecture courses at Columbia, 1932-1933, miscellaneous typescripts of articles and printed materials, 1930-1933, and a typescript of Boring's autobiography, MEMORIES OF THE LIFE AND WORK OF WILLIAM A. BORING, circa 1937. Also included are four sketches by Henri Gauthier, Edward Tilton, Maurice Sashin, and Joseph Laudin.

This collection contains predominantly early 19th-century prints of architecture, cityscapes, and landscapes, with some ethnographic views, in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and other selected countries. The majority of images are from published sources and are uncolored. Nearly all the prints are titled and most include artist, printer, and/or publisher information. Many noted printmakers are represented in this collection, most of whom were British.

The Francis W. B. Yorke papers consist of correspondence, photographs, writings, clippings, and some sketches. The majority of the correspondence in the collection is between Francis W. B. Yorke and his cousin Florence Bridgen dated from 1925 until 1956 (approx. 44 items). One letter in particular, dated 27 Jun 1952, goes into particular detail on the construction of ice houses and underscores Yorke's interest and authority on the topic. The collection also contains 3 letters to Florence Bridgen not from F.W.B. Yorke. The photographs in the collection are from circa 1924-1925 and include two snapshots of the Yorke family and one portrait of a woman (possibly F.W.B. Yorkle's wife Mary or his cousin Florence Bridgen). Writings of Yorke's represented in this collection include the 1956 article "Some Midland Ice-Houses" a published letter from Yorke following a visit to Warsaw in connection with the I.U.A. Working Committee on Housing, an order form for Yorke's seminal 1949 work "The Planning and Equipment of Public Houses" and other miscellaneous clippings. There are also miscellaneous literary articles, typescripts, and poems probably written by F. W. B. Yorke, however, authorship is difficult to confirm. The collection also includes obituaries for Yorke and various clippings and articles on Yorke's architectural projects such as the Ilmington Sports Pavilion, The Shrieves House, and the Sir Thomas Herbert's House. The collection also includes 28 travel sketches and early student works, however, it is unclear if Yorke is the creator of these drawings. A letter written to Florence Bridgen from Yorke's daughter (?) indicates that the drawings are probably not by her father. However, it is also unclear if the letter is referring to all the sketches in the collection or just a small portion. Finally, the collection also includes greeting cards illustrated with reproduction of Yorke's drawings.
