The materials that comprise the Vertical File have been collected and added to from a variety of sources by former Avery Librarians. The vertical file contains clippings, pamphlets, reprints, and other miscellaneous materials relating to persons, places, organizations, and topical subjects relating to architecture, housing, and city planning. The purpose of the vertical file was to arrange and store small items, memorabilia, and ephemeral material on a variety of topics to facilitate access by researchers. For the most part, the vertical file contains printed items only. Manuscript material and other unique items were, generally, not placed in the vertical file. In some cases, manuscript material has been removed from the Vertical File and placed in its corresponding collection.

This collection contains audio recordings of Fellowship talks delivered by Olgivanna Lloyd Wright to members of the Taliesin Fellowship nearly each week, usually on Sundays organized chronologically from 1952-1984. These talks continued a tradition begun by Frank Lloyd Wright; they similarly cover a range of topics from Frank Lloyd Wright's Organic Architecture (often read from transcriptions of his Fellowship talks) to the daily activities of the Fellows. Many include her reading from poetry and philosophy and her own theories on moral character and the ethics of hard work. The collection also includes other talkes, speeches, and interviews with Olgivanna Lloyd Wright.

Angelo Monaco papers, 1985-2005, 2016

Angelo Monaco (CC '87) studied architecture as an undergraduate at Columbia University. Included in this small collection is a 1-page reminiscence on Douglas Darden who was a studio critic while Monaco was an architecture student (2016); a pencil, color pencil, and ink sketch by Darden titled "The Three Temptations" drawn on the verso of a floor plan of Avery Hall's Wood Auditorium (1985); and a signed 10-page lecture "The Diagram as a Space of Difference" by Peter Eisenman (2005).

Robin Middleton is an architectural historian whose work focuses largely on French and English architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection documents Middleton's research and writing process starting with his early dissertation work on Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc at Cambridge University continuing into the 1990s after Middleton joined the faculty at Columbia University.

The oral histories document the life and activities of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship. The collection includes over 140,000 pages of correspondence, which serves as a core resource for understanding Wright's personal and professional activities, relationships, and ideas. The correspondence also includes project records such as specifications, contracts, supply orders, invoices and receipts. Letters from the 1880s through the 1920s accounts for only 2% of the total correspondence in the collection (approximately 2,000 documents). The bulk of the correspondence is from the 1930s until Wright's death in 1959.

Detlef Lienau architectural drawings and papers, 1835-1886

Photographs and architectural drawings of Lienau's work, much of it in New York City and in New Jersey. Projects include the Gardner A. Sage Library for the General Theological Seminary in New Brunswick, N.J.; the Francis Cottenet Villa in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; a house for Legrand Lockwood in South Norwalk, Conn., later owned by Mark Twain and now known as the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion; and the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences in Savannah, Ga. Also included are drawings of unidentified or unexecuted buildings; student drawings, and early European commissions; lecture notes, 1835-1837, from the Stadtische Gewerbeschule, Berlin; a partial list of of Lienau's work, 1848-1886; specifications; acounts; printed material; photographs, postcards, and prints showing various European buildings; clippings; certificates; typescripts of articles; and correspondence.
