The Corporation awards grants to nonprofit organizations and institutions for projects that are broadly educational in nature and that show promise of having national or international impact. Certain appropriations are made for activities, such as Corporation-led initiatives that are administered by the foundation's officers. The trustees set the overall policies of the foundation and have final authority to approve all grants above $50,000 recommended by the program staff. Grants of $25,000 or less, called discretionary grants, are made upon the approval of the president and are reported to the board; larger discretionary grants, those between $25,000 and $50,000, are also reviewed by a Corporation-wide group, which makes recommendations to the president. The Milton Handler Papers span the years 1923 to 1997. The collection's earliest records are class notes taken by Handler while he was a student at Columbia University. The most recent records consist of travel correspondence. In essence, the collection documents 45 years of Milton Handler's activities and achievements as a Professor of Law at Columbia University, a career as a preeminent antitrust and trademark scholar, and a lawyer and senior partner of the firm Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays, and Handler. The records total approximately 96 linear feet of material including correspondence (both incoming letters and carbon copies of outgoing letters); handwritten and typed drafts with corrections; legal memoranda; dockets; reports; legal and legislative documents; clippings; research materials and notes; printed items such as pamphlets, reprints of articles, and speeches; photographs; audio tapes; and award and degree certificates. Professor Handler made the initial donation of material to Butler Library at Columbia University in 1978. Subsequent donations took place in 1982, 1983, and 1984. In 1986, when Special Collections at the Library of the School of Law had been established, Handler requested that the papers donated earlier to Butler Library be transferred to the Library of the School of Law. Minutes, correspondence, annual reports, press releases, financial records, photographs, memorabilia, audiovisual, digital and printed materials document the philanthropic activities and administration of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The collection is actively growing, primarily through regular document transfers from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Andrew Carnegie's biographical information and personal philanthropic activity can be found in Series VII. In addition, his pre-1911 gifts, most notably his donations for libraries and church organs, can be found on microfilm (Series II), in the Home Trust Company Records (VI.A), and Financial Record Books (I.C.1). Grant files (Series III.A), which comprise the bulk of the collection) provide information on projects and institutions founded, endowed or supported by the Corporation. The Special Initiatives series (Series IV) contains the records of task forces, commissions and councils, formed by the Corporation mostly during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s to address specific issues. The Corporation's records include those of other Carnegie philanthropic organizations (Series VI), including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Home Trust Company, both of which shared staff, officers, and office space with the Corporation for a period of time.

This collection consists of audio and reel-to-reel tapes of alumni program meetings around the country and abroad.

This collection consists of the records of the Oral History Research Office at Columbia University. The records include correspondence, annual reports, course materials, program files and the founding documents of the Oral History Association. It also documents the everyday work of managing the collections: reference questions, requests to access materials, permission to publish interview texts, etc.

Typescript carbons of the reminiscences and memoirs of men and women prominent in American life including agriculture, art, book publishing, business, diplomacy, education, journalism, jurists, literature, labor movement, medicine, military history, New York City politics, and special projects such as the Eisenhower Administration, the Marine Corps, popular arts, the radio industry, and social security recorded on tape by the person concerned.

Miscellaneous papers relating to the memoirists who were interviewed by the Oral History Office. Included are original papers, printed materials and microfilm copies of materials not retained by Columbia. One half of the collection consists of original notes, draft transcriptions, related correspondence and documents related to the Radio Pioneer Project.
