Subseries I.1: Woman's Board of Missions

Congregationalist-sponsored Woman's Board of Missions.

The bulk of the ACG records are those of the trustees. These include the work of their most important committees. The early records beginning in 1890 reflect the sponsorship of the college by the Woman's Board of Missions. Mary Mills Patrick, president, Florence Fensham, dean, and others provide accounts to the board of the work of the college. In the main, these reflect the day-to-day decisions necessary to develop a fledgling institution under less than ideal conditions. Important subjects covered in the early years are Patrick's efforts to secure property rights for a permanent campus, and an imperial Irade to formalize approval of the college by the Sultan. Issuance was announced in April 1895.

The diary is a detailed account of Abbott's trip from Sydney, Australia to the Philippines, Hong Kong, Macao, China and Japan. There are numerous pen-and-ink sketches of landscape, architecture, historical sites, and inhabitants, and maps, some in water color. Pasted in the volume are memorabilia such as menus, hotel brochures, postcards, photographs, clippings, calling cards, etc. Of special interest are his accounts of the various native Christian communities he visited. Following the text there is a name index. In addition to the volume there are some related letters, documents, memorabilia and published maps.

American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions records, 1878 -- 1958

The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), organized in 1810, was the first successful North American agency dedicated to foreign missions. ABCFM existed until 1961 when it merged with the Board of International Missions to form the United Church Board for World Ministries. The collection concerns missions in South Africa in Rhodesia and Zulu; missions in Asia including Turkey, India, Japan, and China; missions in the Philippine Islands; and ABCFM organization in general.

This film and commentary, entitled "A Church Is Born" and presented by the India Committee of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America (FMCNA), provides a brief overview of the history of Christian missions to India, explains the appeal for unity amongst Protestant denominations in India, and shows the inauguration of the Church of South India.

The Woman's Board of Missions was a Congregationalist organization from Boston associated with American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), focusing on the benefit of women and children throughout the world, disseminating missionary intelligence, and supporting single women missionaries. The collection contains correspondence from members of the New Haven Branch of the Woman's Board of Missions; detailed minutes from the New Haven Branch and the New York State Branch of the Woman's Board of Missions Executive, Public, and Annual meetings; programs from the Norwich and New London Society and the Brookfield Association of the Auxiliary Foreign Missionary Society; as well as records of the branch officers' conference papers, programs and reports from individual branch meetings, and historical sketches of some branches.
