Lillian D. Wald papers, 1895-1936

Papers concerning both the administration of the Henry Street Settlement and Wald's involvement in numerous philanthropic and liberal causes. Her office files trace the foundation and growth of the Henry Street Settlement from 1895 until 1933. Her other activities include child welfare, civil liberties, immigration, public health, unemployment, and the peace movement during World War I. The correspondence files contain letters from public figures and writers including Jane Addams, Roger N. Baldwin, Van Wyck Brooks, Lavinia L. Dock, John Galsworthy, Samuel Gompers, William D. Howells, Charles Evans Hughes, Mabel Hyde Kittredge, Frances Perkins, Dorothy Thompson, Norman Thomas, Ida Tarbell, Margaret Sanger, and Jacob A. Riis.

The collection includes architectural designs records, maps, photographs, correspondence, construction and maintenance records, and other historical documents, spanning 140 years of the cemetery's operations.

Paul Jarrico papers, 1914-2014

Paul Jarrico (1929-1996) was a Hollywood screenwriter working in the studio system in the 1930s and 1940s. A lifelong communist, he was subpoenaed before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1951. His refusal to comply with the Committee's questions saw him lose his job at RKO and placed on the so-called Hollywood "Blacklist." His films were marked by their marriage of art and politics, often commenting on the pressing issues of their time. Notably, his 1954 film Salt of the Earth, a collaboration between blacklisted filmmakers and the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, was regarded as a subversive critique of mid-century American capitalism.

These materials were kept together in a single fonds comprising four boxes purchased from Glenn Horowitz. They include clippings and correspondence filed seperately from other materials. This separation may have been enacted by Jarrico, or it may have been imposed on the materials by Horowitz prior to accessioning. These folders comprise a mix of personal, professional, and political correspondence, along with clippings about film and politics. The files retain the original order in which they were received and contain Jarrico's original file names. Correspondence is either filed chronologically or catalogued according to author. This series contains other ephemera, most of which appears to have been received in correspondence. Includes corresponce from and to Jarrico.
