The Makino Mamoru Collection on the History of East Asian Film, 1863-2015, bulk 1920s-1990s
370.11 linear feetOver the course of fifty years, the former documentary filmmaker Makino Mamoru (1930-) developed an extensive collection on the history of East Asian film, which covers the history of Japanese cinema spanning over a hundred years. The collection as a whole contains approximately 80,000 items, and focuses on print materials. The materials cover various film events and festivals across multiple genres of films: experimental films, educational films, documentary films, news films, amateur films, and animated films, among many others. The collection contains books, correspondences, handbills, magazines, manuscripts, newspapers, notes, photographs, postcards, posters, scripts/scenarios, slides, glass plate negatives, video cassettes, and other printed materials.

This subseries are divided into three main sections or sub-subseries. The first contains university pre-war coterie publications (50 titles), the second contains coterie publications that are not related to a specific university (39 titles), and the third contains post-war scholarly journals published by academic institutions (kiyō/紀要), which May be universities, colleges or research institutions. In sub-subseries 1, the Japanese universities from which these coterie magazines emerge include Chūō University, Dōshisha University, Keiō Gijuku University, Kyoto Teikoku University, Meiji University, Nihon University, Rikkyo University, Tokyo University, Waseda University, among others. The files in these sub-subseries are listed in alphabetical order by title of the publication with the name of the university club they represented in the notes field. Among the coterie magazines are 23 original issues ofEiga zuihitsu/映画随筆dating from July 1925 to July 1929 along with a photograph from a 1942 Kyoto University academic conference, and photocopied excerpts (folder 11). Some of the coterie magazines, includingEiga zuihitsu/映画随筆and Illusion were stamped Nihon Puroretaria Eiga Renmei/日本プロレタリア映画連盟 (Prokino). Thekiyōin this subseries are organized by the title of the publication with a note as to the institution. They are not film related, but include art and economics. George A. Plimpton Papers, 1634-1956

Plimpton Papers consist largely of personal and professional correspondence, financial and real estate records, personal diaries and albums, writings, and lectures produced by or for George Arthur Plimpton. But the Papers also contains not only the correspondence and records of Plimpton's colleagues at Ginn and Company, the publishing house that Plimpton led for decades, but also correspondence and records relating to the dozens of other institutions and organizations that Plimpton helped lead. In addition to extensive correspondence relating to Plimpton's collecting of rare books, manuscripts, and historical artifacts, the Papers also contain such diverse items as autographs of presidents, handwriting specimens, studies of medieval manuscripts, and documents relating to the American slave trade.
