Correspondence, memoranda, notes, course materials, and printed materials. The course materials consist primarily of notes, bibliographies, syllabi, and related items for the classes Hutchins taught on reference, government documents, and bibliography. The papers also deal with the library school curriculum, several committees of the American Library Association, and also of the Association of American Library Schools.

Widely supported by the American European Intellectual communities, correspondents and contributors include Ruth Benedict, Franz Boas, Max Eastman, Felix Frankfurter, Carl J. Friedrich, Louis R. Gottschalk, Melville J. Herskovitz, Granville Hicks, Sidney Hook, John Maynard Keyes, Kenneth S. Latourette, Max Lerner, Bronislaw Malinowski, Karl Manheim, Margaret Mead, Paul Miliukov, Lewis Mumford, Joseph Needham, Frederick Law Olmstead, Henri Pirenne, Roscoe Pound, Edward Sapir, and Arthur M. Schlesinger. Note, however, that many of the more famous authors wrote only one article for the encyclopaedia, and their correspondence files are accordingly small.

This collection contains the correspondence, typescripts, production files, and financial records of the Encyclopedia of Philosophy (1967). The correspondence is between the editorial staff and the entry authors. The Entries series contains typescript drafts (with holograph corrections) of the articles included in the encyclopedia. Production files contain lists of the members of the Editorial Board, indexes, and table of contents of the encyclopedia. Financial records include ledgers of monthly expences (1962-1964) and monthly production progress reports. One box of closed/restricted files is at the end of the collection. Series I contains correspondence, typescripts with holograph corrections, and galley proofs relating to entries in, and the production of, IESS. Series II includes correspondence relating to changes in articles, production schedules and procedures, and financial records. The Classified Office Files contain correspondence of administrative officers of IESS; memoranda, minutes and agendas of Editorial Advisory Board meetigs; lists of biographers and suggested contributors; and monthly reports. General Production Files are composed of correspondence, invoices, drafts of table of contents, a style manual, editing procedures, and an index. There is also correspondence with prospective members of the Editorial Advisory Board.

Etymological card files of Scott, containing approximately 120,000 manuscript slips which were possibly meant to be used for a projected dictionary of American English etymology.

This is a collection of material relative to the life and career of Prof. Peck. The collection centers around the breach of promise suit brought by Miss Esther Quinn against Dr. Peck and his subsequent dismissal from the university in 1910. The material includes numerous clippings and letters from, to, and relating to Peck from President Nicholas Murray Butler of Columbia, Dr. Robert Arrowsmith of the American Book Company, and others. There are also letters relative to Peck's early teaching career and his life after leaving Columbia. Also, correspondence and other materials relating primarily to Prof. Peck's editorship of THE BOOKMAN, 1895-1907, and of two encyclopedias, THE INTERNATIONAL CYCLOPEDIA and THE NEW INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA.

Prof. Greet has presented Columbia with a collection of letters which he has received from numerous authors, including John Mason Brown, John Cheever, John Dos Passos, Marianne Moore, and 27 from H.L. Mencken. Of special interest is a notebook of letters concerning Greet's dictionary, WORLD WORDS, puiblished in 1944 by CBS as an aid in the understanding and pronunciation of new and foreign words. The notebook contains letters from Henry A. Wallace, George Marshall, Cordell Hull, J. Edgar Hoover, and more than 50 other public officials
