Abstract Or Scope

Correspondence, manuscripts, a Civil War notebook, commemorative postage stamps, an etching, photographs, book reviews and other clippings by and about Holmes. Many of the letters are written to Charles Henry Butler, 1859-1940, Reporter of Decisions at the United States Supreme Court from 1902 until 1916, and contain suggestions for the published reports of Holmes' decisions. There are also many manuscript memoranda of Holmes' suggestions to Butler. There is a letter written to P.E. Mason dated March 1, 1899, giving advice to a young lawyer on what books to read and how to conduct himself; and also Holmes' autograph manuscript of an essay on the legal vocation"Just the Boy That's Wanted in Law.".

This collection contains predominantly early 19th-century prints of architecture, cityscapes, and landscapes, with some ethnographic views, in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and other selected countries. The majority of images are from published sources and are uncolored. Nearly all the prints are titled and most include artist, printer, and/or publisher information. Many noted printmakers are represented in this collection, most of whom were British.

Also, various letters, lecture notes, club membership lists, and Gudeman's own lists of and notes about his works.

American, English and French bookplates from private and institutional libraries. Box four contains some related correspondence concerning Welch's collecting and exchanging of bookplates. Four letters are from the English painter-etcher, Charles William Sherborn, who designed a bookplate for Welch's wife, Fanny Fredericka Dyckman Welch. The original etched plate is also enclosed.
