Album of photographs taken and purchased by Stanford White on a trip to France in 1878.

Papers of Lobeck while he was in Paris as Assistant to the Chief Cartographer of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace. Included are memorabilia, some correspondence, several docuements, and some photographs. The correspondence consists of his letters of appointment from Robert Lansing, Secretary of State, and his postcards to his wife, Bertha Merrill Lobeck, who later joined him in Paris. There are official documents such as passports, Commission memoranda, identification cards, and passes. Of particular interest are sixteen photographs of persons and places in France, and one drawing and one caricature of Lobeck that he sketched. The collection, however, is chiefly memorabilia of Lobeck's crossing the Atlantic on the U.S.S. George Washington with the members of the Commission; over 700 picture postcards, with no messages, of the Lobeck's travels in France, Spain, Great Britain, and other European countries; railway, subway, and bus maps, schedules, and tickets; tourist maps; hotel and restaurant receipts and menus; money; ration coupons; and theater programs.

This collection includes primarily original etchings, engravings, and lithographs, as well as published images from a variety of sources, of individual architectural structures or the built environment. Most of the images are uncolored. The collection is especially strong in images from the United States and England. A significant number of images are plates from Walter Harrison's "A new and universal history, description and survey of the cities of London and Westminister, the borough of Southwark, and their adjacent parts." (London, J. Cooke, 1776). A small portion of the collection depicts decorative arts and interiors. Also included are a few ephemeral items--such as tickets, letterhead, receipts, and bills--that include architectural imagery.

New York City architectural renderer, artist, and printmaker. Born 1884 in Newark, New Jersey, Flanagan graduated from the School of Architecture at Columbia University in 1910. Flanagan taught drawing at Columbia from 1911 to 1912 and returned as an associate professor of design from 1920 to 1925. Flanagan also worked for several architectural firms, often as a renderer, including Trowbridge & Livingston, McKim, Mead & White, and Harvey Corbett. In 1927, Flanagan left Corbett's office and began full time work as a fine artist. From January 1928 until August 1929, Flanagan travelled in Europe, studying with painter Edouard Léon Cortès in Paris from the fall of 1928 through the spring of 1929. Flanagan was also one of the original members of the Society of American Etchers. Flanagan eventually returned to practicing architecture, associating with various firms until he retired in the mid-1960s. He died in New York City in 1969.

("Edgemere"), Bernard Thayer's Beacon Hill houyse in Boston, and Eugene Van Rensselaer Thayer's two houses in Boston and Lancaster, Mass.; the Lucy Dahlgren house in New York City; the Archer M. Huntington house on Fifth Avenue in New York City; interior design for John D. Rockefeller in his house "Kykuit" at Pocantico Hills, N.Y.; interior design work for the Vanderbilt family including Cornelius Vanderbilt's "Breakers" at Newport, R.I. and Frederick William Vanderbilt's mansion in Hyde Park, N.Y. and his house on Fifth Avenue in New York City; Oliver Ames' mansion at Pride's Crossing, Beverly, Mass., and his house in Boston; and interior decoration and alterations for Codman's own homes in Newport, R.I. and Roslyn, N.Y. and his villa in France, "La Leopolda", at Villefranche-sur-Mer. Also, lists, descriptions, and postcards of French chateaux, with related correspondence, circa 1900s-1930s, relating to Codman's bibliography on the chateaux of France; and miscellaneous lists of houses in England and France, correspondence, and printed material.

This collection contains predominantly early 19th-century prints of architecture, cityscapes, and landscapes, with some ethnographic views, in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and other selected countries. The majority of images are from published sources and are uncolored. Nearly all the prints are titled and most include artist, printer, and/or publisher information. Many noted printmakers are represented in this collection, most of whom were British.

This collection contains primarily landscape and cityscape views primarily taken by professional photographers at international sites during the last quarter of the 19th century.
