A collection of correspondence, typescripts, proofsheets, pamphlets, periodicals, and memorabilia by or relating to Sir Winston Churchill. Included are files of Daniel Longwell, editor of LIFE from 1946 to 1954, dealing with the serialization of A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES and TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY in LIFE. Accompanying the collection is a group of approximately 350 books by or about Churchill. Many are first editions or inscribed copies.

Fifty-four letters of and pertaining to members of the Ellison family, chiefly those of Colonel Robert Ellison to his brother Henry Ellison dealing with the former's military activities abroad and in America, 1733-1748, and the letters of Henry to his sons, Henry and Robert, mostly treating the political news of the day in England, 1759-1774. Also the diary of Robert, son of Henry, and various documents.

Manuscripts and correspondence of Sir Norman Angell, covering his work during the two World Wars and British and American politics. Included are more than eighty manuscripts of his articles and essays, and the manuscripts for his autobiography, AFTER ALL. The correspondence file includes letters from Gilbert Murray and William Allen White.

Correspondence with the officers of the League, Clarence G. Hoag, George H. Hallett, Jr., their secretary Miss Elsie S. Parker, and the Field Secretary Walter J. Millard. Correspondence also includes material to and from Proportional Representation Societies in other countries, the largest of which is in Great Britain. Also, research materials concerning early advocates of proportional representation; and correspondence, manuscripts, documents, reports, charts, clippings, and printed materials kept by Richard Spencer Childs.

Correspondence and legal and business papers of Peter Van Schaack and his family. The collection includes letters to and from Egbert Benson, Henry Cruger, James Duane, William Laight, Theodore Sedgwick, Peter Silvester, John Vardill, and many others. The letters deal with such subjects as taxation, the siege of Boston, George Washington, Tories, the Jay Treaty, Shays' Rebellion, and the many prominent people with whom Van Schaack was acquainted, including the Jay family and Gouverneur Morris. There is a large number of letters to and from his brother, Henry Van Schaack (1733-1823). The correspondence contains many political and social opinions regarding America and England before, during, and after the Revolutionary War. Many of the legal documents concern the disputed claims to the Van Rensselaer properties in Claverack and Westenhook, N.Y., as well as land claims around Kinderhoek, N.Y. Henry Cruger Van Schaack added to the collection more letters from well-known people as well as legal and family papers. These are mostly dated in the mid-19th century, and deal in part with the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, the Berkshire Iron Works, and similar business ventures. Many documents are Colonial-era deeds or concern early land disputes such as the New York-Massachusetts boundary dispute.

Eighteen letters of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, friend of Queen Anne, wife of the great English military commander, and ancestress of Sir Winston Churchill. The letters contain comments on the political events of the day, particularly the Jacobite cause, the building of Blenheim Palace, and family affairs. The letters were the subject of an article"The Duchess Speaks Her Mind" by Dallas Pratt in the "Columbia Library Columns" May 1965, pp. 27-42. There are also letters by Jonathan Swift, 13 May 1740; John Constable, 14 Dec. 1833 and 18 Dec. 1834; George W. Wales, 22 Jan. 1859; and a document signed by Louis XIV, 13 Oct. 1705. In addition, there are nine original photographs of Rupert Brooke, taken in London, 1913, by the American photographer Sherril Schell, as well as a photostatic copy of poems from the Rugby notebook of Rupert Brooke. Primarily correspondence between Weston and Robert Livingston Schuyler (1883-1966. Columbia University A.B., 1903; A.M., 1904; Ph.D., 1909; Litt.D., 1954. Professor of History at Columbia, 1911-1951; Editor of the Political Science Quarterly, 1919-1921, Columbia Studies in History, Economics, and Public Law, 1923-1929 & 1944-1948, American Historical Review, 1936-1941"Dictionary of American Biography, Supplement II, 1935-1940" 1954-1958) regarding the volumes they coauthored. There is also correspondence regarding her "English constitutional theory" and other professional and personal matters. There is also a manuscript copy of Schuyler's article"Some twentieth-century revisions in medieval constitutional history" and a small amount of printed material. Biographical information about Schuyler can be found attached to Weston's letter of 5 February 1961 to him.

Correspondence; miscellaneous letters, manuscripts, clippings, and printed material, 1867-1922, relating to the American Historical Association, the Centenary of Anglo-American Peace, and Dartmouth College; memorabilia, and photographs and postcards. Also, Dunning family correspondence and manuscripts, 1781-1915, including letters from Robert Kerr to W.A. Dunning; letters and post cards to Matilda A. Dunning; journals and diaries of William A. Dunning, 1873-1875 and undated, and Charlotte Dunning, 1899-1915; miscellaneous letters among family members; visiting cards; a composition written by Dunning while a boy; and letters relating to Dartmouth college. The collection also includes manuscript notes for lectures, articles, reviews, books, and chapters by Dunning. Some subjects include: "The British Empire and the United States", "Carl Schurz", "England and Ireland", and "Political Theory".

Correspondence, photographs, and printed material by and relating to Benjamin Disraeli. There are nine letters from Disraeli to various persons including Sir Charles Adderly, First Baron Norton; the Duke of Northumberland; and Sir Henry Edwards. The letters span the dates 1849 to 1879. Also included are two letters from Disraeli's father, Isaac D'Israeli, 1766-1848, to Stephen Weston, 1805, and Edward Moxon, 1833, and a post card from William Ewart Gladstone. A letter from William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne to Sir William Owen (1837) has been removed from an extra-illustrated edition of "The Letters of Runnymede" (London, 1836) and cataloged for the collection.
