Professional and personal papers of Smith, including correspondence and manuscripts from his students, family, contemporary mathematicians and teaching colleagues about the history and teaching of mathematics, his many committees, administrative matters at Teachers College, and his travels and collecting. Also, the manuscripts of his writings and his notes.

Arranged alphabetically, these individual portraits of Columbia University faculty members are black and white images mounted on heavy cardboard with the name of the individual typed underneath the image. Names that begin with L-M-N-O-P and Q are missing from this collection.

The papers deal mostly with Greene's academic career as a history professor at University of Illinois and at Columbia University; with his activities in various professional and social organizations; and, to a lesser extent, his travels, studies, and personal and family matters. Among the major correspondents are such public figures as Louis D. Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, and James Jules Jusserand; and such prominent historians as James Truslow Adams, Henry Steele Commager, Samuel Eliot Morison, Richard B. Morris, and Allan Nevins.

Included are about 800 letters from outstanding literary figures of Mr. Conway's lifetime, manuscripts of his sermons, lectures and other writings and photostats of Conway material in Dickinson College Library. This collection contains the correspondence, editorial files and office files of the Columbia University Press, primarily from its reorganization in 1923 by Frederick Coykendall to the present.

The materials that comprise the Historical Biographical Files have been collected and added to from a variety of sources over the years by current and previous staff. The files consist of materials related to people who have a connection to the University whether as student, alumni, administrator, faculty, staff, guest lecturer, or honorary degree recipient. Materials generally consist of newspaper and magazine clippings, press releases, programs, ephemera, printed matter, lists, reports, and pamphlets.
