Correspondence, letter books, manuscripts, typescripts, notes, galley proofs, reports, banking records, pamphlets, and other printed materials. The so-called "private" letter books contain copies of outgoing personal and business letters, April 1914-Jan. 1918. The remaining correspondence files relate to the writing of Hepburn's two books HISTORY OF COINAGE AND CURRENCY IN THE UNITED STATES.. (New York, 1903) and A HISTORY OF CURRENCY IN THE UNITED STATES..(New York, 1915); to his activities in the fields of finance and money, such as the Pan-American Finance Commission (1915), the New York State Governor's Securities Commission (1920), and the Federal Milk Commission (1917); and his files regarding the establishment of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, 1918. Also, manuscripts, typescripts, notes, and galley proofs for the two books that he wrote; and six bank examiner's books used by Hepburn while he was U.S. Bank Examiner for New York, 1888-1892.

Dickinson, 1850-1855; Wakeman, Gookin and Dickinson, 1866-1871; and Wakeman, Dimon & Col, 1853-1863. The letter books, ledgers, and account books show operation of the firm. Many letters of instructions to captains of various vessels.

John Glover orderly books and letter book, 1775-1781

These papers are copies in what appears to be a 19th century hand, on 321 pages of a blank book, of selections from the orderly books and a letter book of General John Glover. The military orders range in date from June 29, 1775 to October 14, 1778 (pp. 1-233) and from August 3, 1781 to November 25, 1781 (pp. 263-321). The letter book occupies thirty pages and is bound in the center of the volume. It contains 35 letters all dated between 16 and 30 September 1777. With the exception of two letters to General Glover's mother and his brother, all are directed to military officers. Many of the letters are written to General George Washington.

Truman, Willa Cather, Frances Folsom Cleveland, Van Wyck Brooks, Robert Frost, Newton D. Baker, Archibald MacLeish, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Carl Sandburg, and Henry Wallace; notes and typescripts for Nevins' books including Emergence of Lincoln, The Ordeal of Democracy, Rockefeller, and History and Historians, with notes by editor Ray A. Billington; miscellaneous transcripts, clippings, newspapers, and photographs. Also, autograph letters and manuscripts by presidents, Civil War figures, financiers, politicians, and authors. There are also the Brand Whitlock World War I Diaries and letters to him by such people as Herbert Hoover, Gen. John J. Pershing, and others.

The records of W.R. Grace & Co. cover the rise of the Grace shipping business from 1864 until World War II. The early correspondence concerns all aspects of the shipping business in New York and South America, mining interests in Peru and Chile, the railroad in Costa Rica, the inter-ocean canal planned for Nicaragua, and political interests throughout Central and South America. There are letter books, correspondence, and scrapbooks of clippings for all aspects of W.R. Grace's career. There are minute books and other documents for more than 50 subsidiary companies owned by W.R. Grace & Co. or by family members. The papers of Joseph Peter Grace (1872-1950) continue the business, family, and philanthropic activities until 1942. There are also 20 reels of motion picture film about the Grace Co. South American interests in the 1950s.

There is a letter book / account book of 347 p., 1790-1856, containing 466 draft copies of his commercial and social correspondence with shipping agents in Great Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Germany, China, Canada, as well as in the United States. The correspondence concerns Bell's business arrangements, the various cargos he shipped and their disposal, political affairs affecting the shipping trade, laws and treaties of various countries to be dealt with, taxes, embargoes, piracy, threats of war, and other pertinent events. A second account book of 84 p. (many are blank), 1787-1852, for the Ship Stephania and others contains ships' records for 1799 to 1828 and miscellaneous accounts up to 1857. There is a one volume carbon typescript (113 p.) of genealogical notes and reminiscences by Gordon Knox Bell (Regent of the University of the State of New York and grandson of Isaac Bell) and others, ca.1940. There is also an essay and lists of the residents of Greenwich Street (including the Bell and Rogers families) by Elizur Yale Smith with related correspondence, 1940.
