The questionnaires, replies and tabulation summaries of a survey of Columbia University Libraries users conducted in 1956. This survey of students, faculty, staff and alumni was part of the larger study of Columbia University's educational program which was issued by the President's Committee on the Educational Future of the University under the title: THE EDUCATIONAL FUTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY, 1957

The Corporation awards grants to nonprofit organizations and institutions for projects that are broadly educational in nature and that show promise of having national or international impact. Certain appropriations are made for activities, such as Corporation-led initiatives that are administered by the foundation's officers. The trustees set the overall policies of the foundation and have final authority to approve all grants above $50,000 recommended by the program staff. Grants of $25,000 or less, called discretionary grants, are made upon the approval of the president and are reported to the board; larger discretionary grants, those between $25,000 and $50,000, are also reviewed by a Corporation-wide group, which makes recommendations to the president. Correspondence, manuscripts, reports, and printed materials. The papers, which consist to a large extent of mimeographed and printed reports of various organizations with which Evans was affiliated, chronicle a wide range of his activities in the fields of law, international relations, and library service. Among the cataloged correspondents are: Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Norman Cousins, S. Radhakrishnan, and Paul H. Douglas.

Correspondence, documents, memoranda, reports, and clippings of book reviews. The correspondence is chiefly with public, university, and special libraries, and with foundations and other organizations. There is correspondence with several leading American librarians, such as Carleton Joeckel, Joseph Wheeler, and Charles C. Williamson. About one half of the collection contains the field reports, interview reports, questionnaires, vocational interest blanks, and related materials used for one Inquiry study by Oliver Garceau"Library Government and Politics", which was published by the Columbia University Press in 1949 as THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS. The manuscript of a report for the Russell Sage Foundation"The Nature of Public Communication", 1955, was added.

Library survey papers documenting Lyle's service on "visitation committees" of the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. For each library evaluation or survey there are letters, committee documents, and related supporting materials supplied by the library under study. Southern academic libraries surveyed include the Universities of North and South Carolina, Rice University, and Washington and Lee University.

Professional correspondence and papers of Tauber, documenting Tauber's career at Temple University Library, University of Chicago Graduate Library School and Libraries, and Columbia University Libraries; and files relating to his editorship of COLLEGE AND RESEARCH LIBRARIES, 1948-1962. General correspondence dealing with all aspects of libraries and librarianship; a subject file containing correspondence, typescripts, mimeographed reports, and related printed material on all aspects of libraries and librarianship, with numerous folders for the University of Chicago and Columbia University Libraries; working papers for many library surveys conducted by Tauber, including six boxes of material relating to his survey of Australian libraries; and two boxes of correspondence and other material for Tauber and Lilley's U.S. Office of Education Project: FEASIBILITY STUDY REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN EDUCATIONAL MEDIA RESEARCH INFORMATION SERVICE, 1960; working papers of many American Library Association, American National Standards Institute, and other professional organization conferences and committee meetings.
