This is a miscellaneous collection of maps transferred from the Geology Department. Some are old and rare, some are modern facsimiles. Gifts, purchases, and relevant maps from other special collections were added over time. Maps are arranged geographically. The library has a card catalog listing the maps individually, alphabetized by geographical/political entitity depicted; i.e., maps of Paris are filed under P, maps of France under F, and maps of Europe under E.

Ivan Pavlovich Romanovskii Papers, 1884-1970

The collection includes photocopies of Romanovskiĭ's school records, his marriage certificate and of three letters to his widow from Vladimir Bek and Alekseĭ A. von Lampe, as well as biographical information assembled by his daughter Irina I. Malina. In addition there are original certificates of merit and cossack village council decrees honoring Romanovskiĭ, several letters, two military decrees signed by General Denikin, and two maps tracing the southern front.

The photographs, taken before 1917, belonged to the Obshchestvo Okhrany Pami︠a︡tnikov Iskusstva i Stariny, and are mostly of Georgian religious art and architecture. The printed materials consist of a map of the Caucasus region and of Obolenskiĭ's memoirs: "Moi vospominanii︠a︡" (1953), and "Moi vospominanii︠a︡ i razmyshlenii︠a︡" (1961). Memoirs were cataloged and transfered to SEEC: see SEEC 1641gb (1953 edition) and SEEC 1642gb (1961 edtition).

Letters, typescripts, typescript notes, and related printed materials. Most of the collection consists of typescript notes compiled by Pratt in the preparation for his book STANTON, LINCOLN'S SECRETARY OF WAR. The notes chiefly relate to the Civil War. It is not always possible to determine the source of a given note. There are 17 letters to Pratt which relate to his book, most of them from Gideon T. Stanton. Also, typescripts for three other books by Pratt: THE EMPIRE AND THE GLORY (N.Y., Sloane, 1941) on the Napoleonic campaigns; ORDEAL BY FIRE (N.Y., Sloane, 1948) on the Civil War; ELEVEN GENERALS; STUDIES IN AMERICAN COMMAND (N.Y., Sloane, 1949). Each of these typescripts has handwritten corrections and instructions for the printer. The printed materials include earlier serial versions of ELEVEN GENERALS and travel brochures and maps of Civil War sites used by Pratt in his research on Stanton.

Typed and handwritten memoirs, the first of which is entitled "Boĭ gvardeĭskoĭ strelkovoĭ brigady 26 VIII/8 IX 1914 g. u derevni Kalishany-Kamen.́" The other, in 2 parts, concerns guard units in 1917. Both memoirs have maps and other illustrative materials. In addition, there is a printed report by Lt. Gen Pestich from 1889, entitled "Ob izmerenii boevykh sil Baltiĭskago i Germanskago flotov."

Touring Maps collection, 1804-1944, bulk 1804-1897

A collection of over 1,300 nineteenth-century maps published for use by tourists and cyclists. Approximately seventy-five percent of the maps depict Italian provinces, but Great Britain and other European countries (especially Switzerland and Germany) are also represented. There are a few maps of non-European countries as well. Most of the maps are mounted on linen and many are folded into cardboard cases as issued. The collection also includes a few guidebooks (published in a set with separate maps) and post card views
