Correspondence, manuscripts, articles, book reviews, personal documents, clippings, scrapbooks and photographs relating to Lengyel's career and his research on the politics of Europe and Asia. Correspondents include Catherine Andrassy Karolyi, Mihaly Karolyi, H.L. Mencken, Ferenc Molnʹar and Leo Szilard. Of special note are Lengyel's extensive autobiographical writings, also outlines and manuscripts of his books including the unpublished "By Their Flame." There are clippings and photocopies of printed articles by Lengyel in English and Hungarian, published biographical information, book reviews and lecture programs. A series of scrapbooks contains clippings on the politics of Europe from 1920 to 1950.

Letters to Kenton from outstanding literary figures such as Theodore Dreiser, Carl Van Vechten, Charles Hanson Towne, George Cram Cook, Henry L. Mencken, Richard Watson Gilder, Witter Bynner. The correspondence is partly personal, and part relates to the Provincetown Players, but chiefly the letters are from editors of various magazines including DELINEATOR and SMART SET, to which Kenton contributed stories.

His writings deal with the labor movement, economics, the Socialist Party, and other liberal causes of the period between the wars. The extensive correspondence in the collection includes letters from Lewis Corey, Herbert Hoover, Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, Ayn Rand, Norman Thomas, and Leon Trotsky.

Mencken as well as artists such as Tom Lea and Peter Hurd. Also, correspondence and memoranda dealing with the Time-Life organization, among them an extensive series of letters from Henry R. Luce and various editors of the magazines.

Papers pertaining to Heuser's studies of Gerhart J.R. Hauptmann (1862-1946), the German dramatist of social protest and early exponent of realism. There is correspondence both with Hauptmann and with others prominent in literary and academic fields, giving their views on Hauptmann. The correspondence is roughly in two groups; letters written to Heuser during his trip to Germany in 1923; and letters concerning Hauptmann's visit to the United States to deliver the oration at the exercises held at Columbia University in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of Goethe, 1932. There are twenty letters from Hauptmann and 59 letters from his wife Margarete. The correspondence with the Hauptmann family continues up to 1957. There are twelve boxes of manuscripts and notes on Hauptmann; and five boxes of mounted clippings and printed extracts. Among the miscellaneous correspondence are letters from H.L. Mencken, Auguste Forel, Albert Schweitzer, Tristram Coffin, and Nicholas Murray Butler. Also, photographs relating to Hauptmann.

Prof. Greet has presented Columbia with a collection of letters which he has received from numerous authors, including John Mason Brown, John Cheever, John Dos Passos, Marianne Moore, and 27 from H.L. Mencken. Of special interest is a notebook of letters concerning Greet's dictionary, WORLD WORDS, puiblished in 1944 by CBS as an aid in the understanding and pronunciation of new and foreign words. The notebook contains letters from Henry A. Wallace, George Marshall, Cordell Hull, J. Edgar Hoover, and more than 50 other public officials
