Correspondence, manuscripts, art works, and printed materials by and about the English Poet Laureate John Masefield. Included are about 72 letters written by Masefield to his wife, Constance, from February through May 1917 when he was with the British Army in northern France. There are also letters from Masefield to Suzanne and Nicholas Fay, Jean Downs, Michael and Mollie Hardwick, Thomas F. E. Kelly, Mrs. Robert Masefield, Lord Noel-Buxton, Ruth Robinson, Dorothy S. Rodwell, and others. In addition, there are autograph manuscripts of poems, manuscript notebooks with drafts of poems, related art work, and printed materials including several items relating to the poets's death. An artificial collection of phonograph records, reels of audio tape recordings, and motion picture films recording a variety of Columbia University academic and extra-curricular activities and events such as lectures; speeches, some at award ceremonies; commencement; installation of Nicholas M. Butler and Dwight D. Eisenhower as presidents of the university; King George VI of England during his visit, 1939; speech of England's Queen Mother, Elizabeth in 1954; homecoming; football, the band; academic and alumni conferences; and radio programs under the auspices of Columbia. Many of the recordings are of Eisenhower. Other prominent personalities include John Foster Dulles, Herbert Hoover, Isidor Rabi, Eleanor Roosevelt, John R. Dunning, and the Shah of Iran.

Letters written by command of members of the British Royal family to Alfred Austin both before and during his service as Poet Laureate of England. The greatest number of letters is from Sir Arthur John Bigge, Equerry and briefly secretary to Queen Victoria, but there are also letters on behalf of Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, and George V written by members of their staffs. All but 5 of the 33 letters are of the period following the appointment of Austin as Poet Laureate, January 1896. Although it is almost entirely made up of brief notes thanking the poet for gifts of printings of his poems, the correspondence as a whole is interesting as a vignette of life within the royal household.

There are 570 letters from John Masefield and his wife to James Alexander MacLachlan, his wife Mary, and their children Howard James and Helen, 1916-1966, autograph poetry manuscripts, drawings, clippings, and 43 books presented by Masefield to Helen MacLachlan. Also, correspondence about the Theodore Roosevelt Association from Horace Marden Albright, Ethel Roosevelt Derby, Hermann Hagedorn, and others as well as correspondence from personal friends; and photographs of the MacLachlan family and friends.
