158.5 Linear FeetThese files have been compiled by the Rare Book and Manuscript Library from its origin in 1930 through the present day. The material derives largely from gifts, and the occasional purchase; much of the subject file in particular is made of ephemera included in the American Type Founders, Co. Library, purchased in 1942. Prospectuses and information sent by fine presses and book artists are added to the relevant files in an ongoing fashion. The files cover subjects from the beginning of printing to the current day.

7 linear feetThis collection of approx. 7 linear feet of papers documents the output of the independent printing press established at Taliesin in the 1930s. The collection consists of brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, Taliesin magazines, festival programs, invitations, and miscellaneous ephemera such as Christmas cards and stationery. The collection also includes every issue of the Taliesin Square Papers series dating from 1941 to 1953. All of the printed material in the collection features the distinctive graphic design associated with Frank Lloyd Wright. Much of the graphic design work can be attributed to Eugene Masselink (1910-1962).

There are also ten volumes of his diaries covering the years from 1918 to 1981 and his autobiographical manuscripts: THE OCTOPUS OF LOVE; THE ANSWER TO LIFE IS NO; BLACK SAHARA; COFFEE FOR LAURA; PRINTERS' PIE; THE FRAIL SCREEN; and NO MONEY FOR DREAMS, as well as many unpublished poems in manuscript. Among the cataloged correspondents are: Dannie Abse, Edwin Brock, Alexander Comfort, Denise Levertov, Kenneth Patchen, and Sydney Tremayne

Series II includes books, Christmas cards and postcards, and other printed ephemera produced by Edward Gorey; various items produced to promote Gorey's printed works; and documentation of their sale to Alpern and other collectors. In addition, the series contains a small amount of printed ephemera produced by Gorey for third parties. Finally, it includes promotional materials for exhibitions of Gorey's work.

This series consists of correspondence, newsletters, committee minutes, notes, and event documentation related to the activities and operations of the Columbia University School of Library Service. The series includes a selection of issues of Library Service News, offering insight into the regular activities of the department, faculty, and alumni, as well notes, place cards, and photographic slides from early printing and private press exhibits held in the library. This series also contains documentation of the establishment of a program concentration in Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Special Collections, including an unsigned letter draft presumably written by Terry Belanger in which he details the need for the program and provides a brief synopsis on the Grolier Club's association with it, and on the 1987 conference on Libraries and Scholarly Communication in the United States sponsored jointly by Columbia University and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.
