Correspondence, notes, notebooks, note card files, clippings and photographs of Louis Morris Starr. One half of the collection consists of his research files for his dissertation"Bohemian Brigade; Civil War Newsmen in Action." (New York, Knopf, 1954). The other half contains photocopies of original Joseph Pulitzer letters and manuscripts in the Pulitzer and "The New York World" Papers at Columbia as well as Pulitzer items from other repositories. In addition there are typescript transcripts of Pulitzer's Pitman shorthand notebooks in Columbia collections. The photocopies and transcripts are annotated by Starr in preparation for a major biography he planned to write on Joseph Pulitzer.

Business correspondence, editorial memoranda, circulation and financial reports, details for the construction and enlargement of the Pulitzer Building on Park Row, and general papers of THE WORLD. The earlier part of this collection is made up of all materials brought to the attention of Joseph Pulitzer during his editorship and that of his son, Ralph Pulitzer. For the time from Joseph Pulitzer's death in 1911 until ca. 1920, the papers are primarily the files of THE WORLD's "Bureau of Accuracy and Fair Play" directed by Isaac D. White. During the 1920s and until 1931, there is also much material from other departments of the paper such as the composing room, the purchasing department, and the auditors. Also included is a re-recorded audio tape from cylinders originally placed in the World Building cornerstone, October 9-10, 1889. The materials from 1932 until 1940 are insurance policies for the Pulitzer Building and financial reports winding up the affairs of the Pulitzer's Press Publishing Company. Materials collected by R.H. Lyman of THE WORLD's staff from 1893 until 1931 have been added.

The correspondence, which comprises the largest part of the collection, is rich in information about New York politics and social activities at the turn of the century. The letter books cover the years 1890-1911. The collection also contains legal papers, drafts of speeches, clippings, and memorabilia. Correspondents with Shepard include Felix Adler, Thomas Willing Balch, Frederic Bancroft, Bernard Baruch, Richard Rogers Bowker, William Jennings Bryan, Alfred Clark Chapin, Grover Cleveland, Hamlin Garland, Richard Watson Gilder, Edward Everett Hale, Fletcher Harper, Abram S. Hewitt, Charles Evans Hughes, John La Farge, Henry Cabot Lodge, Josephine Shaw Lowell, Hamilton Mabie, Walter H. Page, Alton B. Parker, George Foster Peabody, Bliss Perry, Joseph Pulitzer, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Carl Schurz, Kate Nichols Trask, Oswald Garrison Villard, and Booker T. Washington.
