Al Jaffee (1921-2023) was a comic artist best known for creating MAD magazine's iconic Fold-In feature. The collection contains extensive original artwork, including sketches, tracings, and proofs documenting Jaffee's creative process. Publishing and commission contracts, correspondence, clippings, and a small amount of programs and ephemera from fan conventions and other public appearances are also included.

Mike Friedrich papers, 1978-2000

Mike Friedrich began his comics career as a fanzine contributor before, beginning at age 18, writing comics stories for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. In the second half of the 1970s, he published Star*Reach, an independent comics anthology that included both mainstream and alternative artists. In the early 1980s, Friedrich used the same name for his comics creators agency. He was also co-founder of WonderCon, which Comic-Con International purchased in 2001. The collection includes client directories, income journals, client surveys, contracts, Star*Reach promotional swag, and more. Friedrich has received the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic-Book Writing, which recognizes underappreciated comics writers.

Series III is the largest series in the collection. It contains materials related to underground comix and comic strips by Howard Cruse, including correspondence, sketches and original artwork, proofs, and published works. These include the underground comix Barefootz and Gay Comix, as well as the comic strips Tops and Button,Count Fangor,Doctor Duck, and Wendel. The series also documents Cruse's other roles within the comics industry: art directing Starlog, writing a column for Comics Scene, and editing Gay Comix #1-#4. Significant events and controversies within the comics industry documented in the collection include the 1971-1980 Walt Disney Productions v. Air Pirates court case, which Cruse's 1981-1983 Comics Scene column addressed, and the 2000-2004 Little Sisters Book and Art Emporium v. Canada censorship case, for which Cruse provided expert testimony (Subseries III.4).

The records include contracts, correspondence, editorial files, financial records, proofs, and other materials. This collection is still being processed; currently, only the correspondence is available for research.

Series consists of 8 boxes of cosplay costume parts and one folder of patterns, lists, cosplan, and a photograph of Wendy Pini in her Red Sonja cosplay. Wendy co-authored Marvel's Red Sonja comic #6 (1977) and was twice the winner of the Red Sonja look-alike contests at SonjaCon in New York City in November 1976, and a convention in Philadelphia in July 1977. She also wore this cosplay for the "Sonja and the Wizard", a 20-minute show where she performed with Frank Thorne as the Wizard at the San Diego Comic-Con in 1978. An article in the Erotic Worlds of Frank Thorne, no. 6, 1991, features and writes about Wendy Pini as Red Sonja at various conventions.
