Drafts of translations prepared by Peter Dornan. These include an incomplete draft of an English translation of an untitled manuscript by one Zagola, about political movements in the Caucasus region during the Revolution. Also included are drafts of an English translation of a manuscript by Hryhory Kosti︠u︡k entitled "The Ukraine under Stalin"; this work was published as "Stalinist Rule in the Ukraine: A Study of the Decade of Mass Terror, 1929-1939" (New York, 1961).

Konstantin Feodos'evich Shteppa Papers, 1945-1959

Nearly all the manuscripts in the collection deal with 20th century Russian and Soviet politics. These include "Chekizm i chekisty," "The Cult of Stalin," "Marks-Lenin-Stalin," "Russkiĭ blankizm" and "Tekushchai︠a︡ sovet︠s︡kai︠a︡ propaganda o revizionizme i dialektike." There is a book-length manuscript entitled "V plenu -- Velikai︠a︡ chistka 1936-1939" and a transcript of a Radio Liberty interview with Shteppa in 1953. There is a lengthy curriculum vitae of Shteppa accompanied by several lists of his major publications. The printed materials include clippings, a number of published articles and booklets by Shteppa as well as a few other journals.

Mstislav Petrovich Golovachev Papers, 1898-1954

Most of the collection dates from 1918-1940, and concerns the Civil War in Siberia and the emigration in China. There is a long manuscript by Golovachev on the Civil War. Other manuscripts include memoirs by F. Porotikov on Admiral Kolchak, and one by V. Russii︠a︡n, a former tsarist police official, attempting to prove that Stalin was a police agent. Photographs include an inscribed portrait of Lev Tolstoĭ. Subject files concern various Siberian and Far Eastern institutions and organizations, and deal with both the Civil War and the emigration. Printed materials include books, pamphlets, newspapers, and clippings, again mostly on Siberian or Far Eastern affairs, or on the law.

Edmund Stevens (1910-1992) was an American journalist who worked as a foreign correspondent in the Soviet Union from the 1930s until the early 1990s. He won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in 1950. The papers include articles, book materials, correspondence, travel notes, reporter notebooks, and photographs.

The collection of printed materials consists of eighteen boxes of newspaper clippings, oversize clippings and various newspaper letters and flyers. The clippings cover the 1920-1975 period and deal with topics including: World War II, Soviet affairs, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Russian literature, Asian affairs and such individuals as Stalin, Khrushchev, Solzhenit︠s︡yn and Sakharov. There are newsletters from the St. Sergius High School and the Tolstoy Foundation as well as a number of pamphlets on East European affairs.

The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, books and periodicals. There are two letters from Aleksandr Glazunov and one each from Aleksandr Grechaninov and Nikolaĭ Metner. The manuscripts deal with both cultural affairs and the Russian Revolution. Among the cultural topics are essays on music, Isadora Duncan, Maksim Gorḱiĭ and literary affairs. There are articles about general aspects of the Revolution and about such individuals as Lenin, Stalin, Chicherin, Dzerzhinskiĭ and Kamenev. Many of the articles are memoiristic in nature, particularly those about life in Moscow and in the provinces during the Revolution, Dzerzhinskiĭ and Kamenev. There are clippings of articles written by Sabaneev and a number of books and periodicals either written by Sabaneev or containing articles by him.

Working files for the book SPECIAL ENVOY TO CHURCHILL AND STALIN, 1914-1946 by William Averell Harriman and Elie Abel, containing typescript drafts with handwritten corrections of Harriman's recollections; typescript notes; photocopies of American, British, and Soviet (in translation) diplomatic correspondence, memoranda, and reports; speeches and other writings by Harriman; and related background materials. The period covered is 1941-1946 and 1951-1954. Among the photocopies are letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Edward Stettinius, Harry Hopkins, Dean Acheson, Charles Bohlen, Joseph Stalin, Vyacheslav Molotov, Andrei Vyshinsky, Winston Churchill, and Anthony Eden. Also, five letters from Harriman to Abel written in 1973-1974, concerning the details of writing this book (these are the only letters cataloged in this collection).
