Professional and personal papers containing correspondence, manuscripts (chiefly typescript versions, many with holograph corrections), documents, photographs, memorabilia, newspapers clippings, printed materials, and some art work. The letters cover his professional, personal and family life. Among the significant correspondents are Orvil E. Dryfoos, James B. Reston and the Sulzberger family. The majority of the papers consist of Alden's manuscripts for his articles and editorials written for the "New York Times." There are some articles that were submitted to various magazines, as well as copy under the pseudonym, Carlton (Tubby) Belmont, written for the Women's news Service. Alden's "Times" writings deal with the New York metropolitan area, the 1963-64 World's Fair, France, Cuba, Southeast Asia, Ships, and the United Nations. In addition there are manuscripts of his stories, novels and poetry. The stories and novels deal with reporters, politics, war and show business. Alden's personal papers and documents relate to his years at City College and in the Army and contain other personal items. Also included is a typescript copy of his autobiography. The newspaper clippings and printed matrerials are mostly of his writings. There are numerous photographs as well as more than one box of memorabilia.

Included are Cerf's personal correspondence files, 1929-1945, and the diaries and scrapbooks which he maintained from his school days throughout his active career. The diaries, in date-book format, contain terse notes on Cerf's meetings with authors and friends, on his travels and publishing activities; the scrapbooks contain correspondence and photographs, as well as memorabilia and printed items, and were annotated by Cerf and his wife, Phyllis Fraser Cerf Wagner. Also in the collection are manuscripts and proofs for Cerf's books including "The Laugh's on Me""Treasury of Atrocious Puns""The Sound of Laughter""Stories to Make You Feel Better", and "At Random: the Reminiscences of Bennett Cerf", which was edited by Phyllis Cerf Wagner and Albert Erskine, 1977. The papers also include condolence letters written at the time of Cerf's death, photographs and photo albums,certificates and awards, and miscellaneous printed material, including Random House and Modern Library catalogues. This collection contains approximately 5,500 photographic prints and 12,400 negatives taken and used by the Spectator. The photographs consist of black and white, silver gelatin prints and 35mm negatives. The bulk of the images are portraits, with many press photographs provided to the newspaper by outside sources. Not all prints have corresponding negatives. Photographs were filed together by name so that several views can be found in one folder. The original folder-level description was maintained.

Included with the collection are campaign materials for other candidates, and campaign buttons for Samuels, Nelson A. Rockefeller, and others. Major correspondents include William Averell Harriman, Hubert Horatio Humphrey, LeRoi Jones, Edward I. Koch, John V. Lindsay, Robert Moses, and Edmund S. Muskie.

The correspondence, speeches, and other material relate primarily to his activities as District Attorney, and to his unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate, 1958. The papers also reflect Hogan's deep concern for Columbia University, as a Trustee and a member of numerous alumni committees. Among the major correspondents are Harry J. Carman, Dwight David Eisenhower, Robert F. Kennedy, Arthur Hays Sulzburger, and Herbert Bayard Swope.

Correspondence is both professional and personal, relating primarily to Fuld's duties in the New York District Attorney's Office, as a judge in the state and federal courts, and to his civic work for the Jewish Theological Seminary, the City College of New York, New York University, and the Columbia University Law School. Major correspondents include: Thomas E. Dewey, Louis Finkelstein, Herbert Lehman, and Nelson A. Rockefeller. The rest of the collection consists of Fuld's briefs, opinions, memoranda, forms of indictments, appeals cases, reports for the New York State Court of Appeals from his appointment in 1946 through 1973, and manuscripts of his speeches and lectures. The memoranda series deals chiefly with investigations into organized crime. In addition there are biographical materials, memorabilia, and photographs.

The materials that comprise the Historical Biographical Files have been collected and added to from a variety of sources over the years by current and previous staff. The files consist of materials related to people who have a connection to the University whether as student, alumni, administrator, faculty, staff, guest lecturer, or honorary degree recipient. Materials generally consist of newspaper and magazine clippings, press releases, programs, ephemera, printed matter, lists, reports, and pamphlets.
