Walter Sobotka architectural records and papers, 1897-1971, bulk 1922-1954
771 drawingsThis collection contains architectural records, student work, correspondence and professional writings related to the academic and architectural practice of Walter Sobotka. The largest portion of the collection, Series 1, relates to his architectural practice and contains drawings, files, and a scrapbook of photographs and articles pertaining to his work in Europe and America. The majority of his projects consisted of residential buildings and interiors in Austria along with furniture designs. However, there is also a selection of theater interiors that Sobotka designed for RKO across the United States. Series 2 contains a limited selection of Sobotka's lectures and writings, as well as correspondence. This series also contains material relating to two of his unpublished writings, The Prefabricated House and Principles of Design, including copies of the manuscripts, correspondence with publishers, and research materials. A bound version of Principles of Design is catalogued separately and contains an appendix in which Sobotka translated into English excerpts of his correspondence with the Viennese architect Josef Frank. Series 3 contains some artwork and student drawings, as well as a few personal letters.

Series IV contains approximately 3,700 drafted and hand-drawn architectural drawings, fine-art renderings and sketchbooks, as well as medium and large-format photographic prints and transparencies. All are organized alphabetically by project name. The series includes roughly fifty travel sketches and loose figure studies, but the bulk of the material concerns specific architectural and design projects, and appears to comprehensively document Ferri's professional career and fine-arts technique.

Alan Colquhoun papers, 1942-2010
10 document boxesThis collection is composed primarily of correspondence, memoranda, course material, photographs, drawings and slides. The collection is broken down into personal and academic papers. The academic papers pertain mainly to Colquhoun's career as a writer and theoretician and professor at Princeton University's School of Architecture. The personal papers consist mainly of correspondences with friends and family, as well as notebooks, which Colquhoun kept from the 1940s. The visual materials (photographs and drawings) straddle the two categories. Many of the photographs were taken by Colquhoun himself, to be used later in his teaching, while the drawings consist of both student work and reproductions of works from his practice with John Miller. For the majority of the collection, Colquhoun's folder titles have been maintained and the material has been arranged chronologically. The collection is arranged into four series.

350 drawingsMore than 120 architects from the United States and abroad contributed original drawings to this collection. Most are hand-drawn; some are printed through traditional etching or lithography techniques; a few others are computer-generated prints. Images are primarily related to the architects' projects, although some drawings are travel sketches of other structures. Drawings in this archive were exhibited at the Miriam & Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery and the Arthur Ross Gallery at Columbia University, Apr. 3-May 4, 1991. At least one drawing from each contributor was published in the accompanying exhibition catalog, CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS (San Francisco: Pomegranate Artbooks, 1991).

Francis W. B. Yorke papers, 1922-1966
0.5 manuscript boxThe Francis W. B. Yorke papers consist of correspondence, photographs, writings, clippings, and some sketches. The majority of the correspondence in the collection is between Francis W. B. Yorke and his cousin Florence Bridgen dated from 1925 until 1956 (approx. 44 items). One letter in particular, dated 27 Jun 1952, goes into particular detail on the construction of ice houses and underscores Yorke's interest and authority on the topic. The collection also contains 3 letters to Florence Bridgen not from F.W.B. Yorke. The photographs in the collection are from circa 1924-1925 and include two snapshots of the Yorke family and one portrait of a woman (possibly F.W.B. Yorkle's wife Mary or his cousin Florence Bridgen). Writings of Yorke's represented in this collection include the 1956 article "Some Midland Ice-Houses" a published letter from Yorke following a visit to Warsaw in connection with the I.U.A. Working Committee on Housing, an order form for Yorke's seminal 1949 work "The Planning and Equipment of Public Houses" and other miscellaneous clippings. There are also miscellaneous literary articles, typescripts, and poems probably written by F. W. B. Yorke, however, authorship is difficult to confirm. The collection also includes obituaries for Yorke and various clippings and articles on Yorke's architectural projects such as the Ilmington Sports Pavilion, The Shrieves House, and the Sir Thomas Herbert's House. The collection also includes 28 travel sketches and early student works, however, it is unclear if Yorke is the creator of these drawings. A letter written to Florence Bridgen from Yorke's daughter (?) indicates that the drawings are probably not by her father. However, it is also unclear if the letter is referring to all the sketches in the collection or just a small portion. Finally, the collection also includes greeting cards illustrated with reproduction of Yorke's drawings.
