The papers reflect Lindsay's various activities and are arranged in two sequences, an alphabetical name file and an alphabetical subject file. Since many of the subjects are closely related, the division between them is not always very sharp. Among the subjects covered are: social legislation, I.L.O., National Child Labor Committee, prohibition, labor, Republican National Committee, Institute for Social Research, League of Nations, humane legislation, housing, Harmon Foundation, Educational Radio Corporation, and the Bergh Foundation. Papers concerning both the administration of the Henry Street Settlement and Wald's involvement in numerous philanthropic and liberal causes. Her office files trace the foundation and growth of the Henry Street Settlement from 1895 until 1933. Her other activities include child welfare, civil liberties, immigration, public health, unemployment, and the peace movement during World War I. The correspondence files contain letters from public figures and writers including Jane Addams, Roger N. Baldwin, Van Wyck Brooks, Lavinia L. Dock, John Galsworthy, Samuel Gompers, William D. Howells, Charles Evans Hughes, Mabel Hyde Kittredge, Frances Perkins, Dorothy Thompson, Norman Thomas, Ida Tarbell, Margaret Sanger, and Jacob A. Riis.

They include several series of office files dealing with Columbia University Law faculty, students, his course materials, and the administration of the Law School. In addition, there are numerous files for Amherst College (from which Gellhorn received his A.B. degree), arbitration cases, federal administrative procedure, legislation, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Association of American Law Schools, and Fordham University (for which he prepared a study). There are manuscripts, drafts, proofs, correspondence, and other related materials for some of his books: Administrative Law Cases and Comments (1940); Security, Loyalty and Science (1950); The States and Subversion (1952); Individual Freedom and Government Restraint (1956); When Americans Complain (1966); and Ombudsmen and others (1966).
