In most cases there are one or two letters to or from each individual. The major correspondent is Ellsworth Bunker, U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam.

The letters refer to the personal affairs of the two men and to a large extent to the matters of contemporary diplomacy and politics. Among the subjects touched upon are the peace treaty with England, the Barbary powers, Spanish remonstrance against U.S. navigation of the Mississippi, and Mr. Adams' reception at the British court. Four of the letters bear manuscript copies of Kilham's reply.

2.5 linear feetWorking files for the book SPECIAL ENVOY TO CHURCHILL AND STALIN, 1914-1946 by William Averell Harriman and Elie Abel, containing typescript drafts with handwritten corrections of Harriman's recollections; typescript notes; photocopies of American, British, and Soviet (in translation) diplomatic correspondence, memoranda, and reports; speeches and other writings by Harriman; and related background materials. The period covered is 1941-1946 and 1951-1954. Among the photocopies are letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Edward Stettinius, Harry Hopkins, Dean Acheson, Charles Bohlen, Joseph Stalin, Vyacheslav Molotov, Andrei Vyshinsky, Winston Churchill, and Anthony Eden. Also, five letters from Harriman to Abel written in 1973-1974, concerning the details of writing this book (these are the only letters cataloged in this collection).

4 boxesPapers, correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and printed material relating to Dr. Bela Fabian's activities against the Communist government of Hungary. One microfilm reel of Hungarian political cartoons, including many caricatures of Fabian. Also, eighteen political cartoons by Bela and Ilona Fabian done at the time of the Cuban Missile crisis in 1961. These tend to be anti-Castro and anti-Khruschev.
