These albums contain mounted black-and-white photographic prints documenting historic sites and structures along the East Coast of the United States, from the South to New Hampshire, created and collected by architect and historian John Mead Howells. These albums appear to have been created as reference sources for Howell's publications LOST EXAMPLES OF COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE (New York, W. Helbrvn, 1931), THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE OF THE PISCATAQUA (New York: Architectural Book Publishing Company, 1937), and THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE OF THE MERRIMACK (New York: Architectural Book Publlishing Company, 1941). However, many additional images may be found in these albums than were used in these publications. The images were taken during the second half of the 19th-century and the early 20th-century of historic buildings and sites constructed during the 18th- and 19th-centuries. Most images have annotations and caption information in typescript or in Howell's own hand. Howells collected most of the images from a variety of sources, including the Frank Cousins image collection at the Essex Institute, the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, architect Ogden Codman, and the Historic American Buildings Survey. The remainder were taken by Howells himself.

Papers of Howe, including family, personal, and professional correspondence; bills and receipts; photographs, itineraries, and brochures of his numerous American and European trips; four diaries for the years 1901, 1905, 1909, 1910; sermons, scripture readings, and other materials related to his ministry; addresses and writings; Howe-Barber genealogical materials, including galley proofs for his biography JEDIAH BARBER.

Architectural drawings for buildings designed by Hamlin including proposed alterations for the Charles Dudley Warner House, circa 1885; pumping station Clear Stream (or Clear Stream Station), Long Island, 1886; American Classical School, Athens, Greece, 1886-1888; proposed cottage for Mrs. R. Hoe at Sea Cliff, Long Island, 1887; an addition to Clinton Hall at Blair Presbyterian Academy, Blairstown, New Jersey, circa 1896; Soldier's Monument, Whitinsville, Massachusetts, circa 1904 (Hamlin was the architect and Herman A. MacNeil was the sculptor); and miscellaneous and unidentified structures. Also included are drawings done by Hamlin while a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1876-1877; sketches done by Hamlin on travels both in the United States and abroad, 1867-1923; photographs of various unidentified buildings and architectural drawings; manuscripts of "ARCHITECTURAL SHADES AND SHADOWS" with related drawings"History of American Art" (unfinished, in French), circa 1923, and "MODERN ARCHITECTURE AND THE CRITICS" circa 1923. Personal materials included undated photographs of A.D.F. Hamlin; a photograph of an 1835 portrait of Cyrus Hamlin; a volume containing condolences, 1926, on the occasion of A.D.F. Hamlin's death; and a scrapbook"Memoirs of Amherst, Class of '75" containing programs, invitations, clippings, notes, essays, exam questions, steamship passenger lists, and other materials.

This collection includes primarily original etchings, engravings, and lithographs, as well as published images from a variety of sources, of individual architectural structures or the built environment. Most of the images are uncolored. The collection is especially strong in images from the United States and England. A significant number of images are plates from Walter Harrison's "A new and universal history, description and survey of the cities of London and Westminister, the borough of Southwark, and their adjacent parts." (London, J. Cooke, 1776). A small portion of the collection depicts decorative arts and interiors. Also included are a few ephemeral items--such as tickets, letterhead, receipts, and bills--that include architectural imagery.

This collection contains predominantly early 19th-century prints of architecture, cityscapes, and landscapes, with some ethnographic views, in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and other selected countries. The majority of images are from published sources and are uncolored. Nearly all the prints are titled and most include artist, printer, and/or publisher information. Many noted printmakers are represented in this collection, most of whom were British.

A teaching collection of original comic art, much of which sheds light on various historical styles or techniques. Accompanied by several comic books. Materials includes daily newspaper strip art, Sunday newspaper strip art, single-panel cartoons, comic book pages, and related comics material, such as printing plates and ephemera.

The collection of historical photographs and lithographs of New York City consists of about 3,000 items dated from the 1850s until the 1980s. The collection is made up of color photographic prints, color negatives, black-and-white photographic prints, black-and-white negatives, copy prints, studio and cabinet cards, stereo cards, cyanotypes, albumen prints, gelatin silver prints, lantern slides, glass negatives, and Polaroid prints, lithographs, woodcuts, tear sheets, and engravings. The collection also includes official images, newspaper images, and candid images. Also included are images from the photo morgue of the New York Herald-Tribune newspaper, which ceased publication in 1966. Other images were purchased as copies from New-York Historical Society, Museum of the City of New York, WNYC-FM Radio, the Bettman Archive, and from collectors, private vendors, and other institutions. Photos by noted photographers are included.

This collection primarily includes black and white and color photographic prints of approximately 100 buildings designed by the American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in locations throughout the United States, circa 1945-1969.
