Papers and correspondence including letters from leading intellectuals of the United States and Europe. Much of this correspondence pertains to the publication and critical discussion of his two influential works, MANHOOD OF HUMANITY : THE SCIENCE AND ART OF HUMAN ENGINEERING (1921) and SCIENCE AND SANITY : AN INTRODUCTION TO NON-ARISTOTELIAN SYSTEMS AND GENERAL SEMANTICS (1933).

Personal and professional papers of Stedman, including correspondence, letter books, diaries, poetry manuscripts, scrapbooks, photographs, and genealogical materials for the Stedman and Dodge families. Correspondence and manuscripts of his mother, Elizabeth Clementine Dodge Stedman Kinney (1810-1889), poet and diarist, and of his granddaughter, Laura Stedman Gould (1881-1941), author and editor. Also, editions of Stedman's LIBRARY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE including printed materials relating to the marketing; and an album of Civil War photographs by Mathew Brady, inscribed by the photographer to Laura H.W. Stedman as well as additional loose photographs by Brady.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, reports, and printed material of Hughes. The papers cover primarily the period following Hughes' defeat in the 1916 presidential election up to his appointment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1930; in most files there is a gap from March 1921 to March 1925, when Hughes was Secretary of State. Some materials relate to the law firm of Hughes, Rounds, Schurman and Dwight (later Hughes, Schurman and Dwight), but primarily concern Hughes' philanthropies and activities in professional organizations. Among these latter associations are the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Legal Aid Society, and the New York State Bar Association. Records for a number of Hughes' cultural, educational, and international philanthropies, such as the Armenian National Union of America and the George Washington Memorial Association, are included as are materials on his participation in the 1918-1924 aircraft investigation, the Sixth Pan American Conference (Havana, 1928), and the Permanent Court of International Justice, the Hague.

Letters addressed to the Cranes from various members of the Crane and Howorth families, and from prominent literary figures such as Joseph Conrad, Henry James, H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Hamlin Garland, Elbert Hubbard, and Rider Haggard. A number of these letters relate to Cora Crane's activities after Stephen Crane's death, but the majority have to do with life at Brede Place in Sussex. Also present are a number of holograph manuscripts of Stephen Crane's literary works and manuscripts and typescripts of other material which he dictated. There is a group of stories and articles by Cora Crane, some pictures, photographs, art, and memorabilia. Also, seventy-four books from Crane's library, many of them signed.

Professional and personal files including Armstrong's correspondence with professional associations, other engineers, and friends, his research notes, circuit diagrams, lectures, articles, legal papers, and other related materials. Of his many inventions and developments, the most important are: 1) the regenerative or feedback circuit, 1912, the first amplified radio reception, 2) the superheterodyne circuit, 1918, the basis of modern radio and radar, 3) superregeneration, 1922, a very simple, high-power receiver now used in emergency mobile service, and 4) frequency modulation - FM, 1933, static-free radio reception of high fidelity. More than half the files concern his many lawsuits, primarily with Radio Corporation of America, over infringement of the Armstrong patents. Litigation continued until 1967. Other files deal with his work in the Marcellus Hartley Research Laboratory at Columbia University, 1913-1935, and with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, his Air Force contracts for communications development, Army research during World War II, the Radio Club of America, the Institute of Radio Engineers, FM development at his radio station at Alpine, N.J., the use of FM in television, his involvement in Federal Communications Commission hearings and legislation, and his work with the Zenith Radio Corporation. The Telford Taylor Papers collect the work of Telford Taylor as a lawyer, legal scholar, writer, and historian. The documents include Taylor's work in Nuremberg with the International and Nuremberg Military Tribunals, his work within departments created by the New Deal, some of his legal case files (particularly on civil liberties cases), and other professional interests that Taylor had. The collection also contains Taylor's writings including drafts of his books, speeches, interviews, teaching materials, and much of the research behind these pursuits. The genre of materials includes official reports, correspondence, manuscripts, annotated texts and photographs. The collection also contains Taylor's research materials in the form of annotations, notes, and clippings.

Orders, financial records, subject files, lists and service records of the Russian Expeditionary Forces. The collection pertains almost entirely to World War I, and there are limited materials on the Civil War in Russia and the emigration in Europe. The bulk of the collection consists of service records (posluzhnye spiski) and lists of soldiers from the 1st and 2nd Special Infantry (Osobye Pekhotnye) divisions. There are reports, plans, orders and financial records concerning these units in 1916-1919, chiefly in France. Files in the Civil War largely concern the northwestern front. Other files concern courts of honor (sud chesti) both in World War I and in the 1920s. Also in the collection is a book, IU. N. Danilov "Russkie Otriady na Frantsuzskom i Makedonskom Frontakh, 1916-18 g.".
