These files have been compiled by the Rare Book and Manuscript Library from its origin in 1930 through the present day. The material derives largely from gifts, and the occasional purchase; much of the subject file in particular is made of ephemera included in the American Type Founders, Co. Library, purchased in 1942. Prospectuses and information sent by fine presses and book artists are added to the relevant files in an ongoing fashion. The files cover subjects from the beginning of printing to the current day.

Letters written by Cole to Robert Underwood Johnson. These letters cover the period Cole was in Europe making engravings of great European paintings for a series which appeared in Johnson's CENTURY magazine. There are also letters from Cole to Melvin Loos, relating to the printing of Cole's engravings of paintings and portraits. Also, 250 engravings by Cole; and letters from Cole to William Kimberley Palmer, written during Cole's sojourn abroad.

Anderson's connections to Columbia are many. He received an M.D. from Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1796, engraved Columbia's commencement ticket in 1794, and a bookplate for the College Library. As noted in his diary, he began sketching the design for the bookplate on March 14, 1795, delivered the finished work to President Johnson on March 25th, and was, after some effort on his part, paid £2, 8s on May 7th.

The Giacomo Patri Archive contains a bound manuscript of Patri's "White Collar", books from the Patri School of Art, notes on Patri, and several books on art, wordless books, and other topics. Each item is quantified, adding up to 6 books, 9 items (books and ephemera), and 9 additional items illustrated by Patri.

Letters written to Dibdin. All of the material is concerned with the execution of drawings, etched and or engraved plates and woodcuts for Dibdin, perhaps in preparation for his BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ANTIQUARIAN AND PICTURESQUE TOUR IN FRANCE AND GERMANY (1821). Chief among the correspondents are the English engravers James Mitan, George Hollis, and Frederick C. Lewis.

Correspondence, a woodblock print, a typescript about Robert Indiana, photographs, and printed materials. There are 35 letters, post cards, and other correspondence from Indiana to Carr; his woodblock print on a Christmas card; 20 photographs of his paintings, and printed announcements and articles about Indiana. There is also some miscellaneous correspondence about the artist Ernest T. Trova

Letters, manuscripts, documents, and printed materials by and relating to explorers of both poles. Many of the letters are addressed to Vilhjalmur Stefansson or Bassett Jones. The letters for the most part discuss subjects of professional interest. Thre are printed materials, photographs and memorabilia of many expeditions and explorers.
